However is this an exhibition? Without objects? Only films? Is that a movie? Shepherds in the age of the electric fence.

The concept of the traditional exhibition has been significantly rewritten by 20th century art schools and the museums which displayed their works. However, an ethnographic exhibition which only comprises short films is rather unusual in the Hungarian museums. Still, we relatively easily accept this exhibition which introduces us the shepherds’ lives, customs, economic system and role in the society. Even the wise shepherd as a character of folk beliefs turns up. We have numerous reasons for this acceptance. In the videos animation provides great background to archived films, recordings, data, and resources from public archives. The videos are not too long and definitely digestible for the average visitor. Sándor Aranyos, the curator, focussed on details which are not displayed and discussed in other parts and exhibitions of the Skanzen.

Although the structure of the videos and their pictorial world resembles the hypermedia even if it is not possible to navigate on touch screens. The curator directs our attention, we follow the films in a linear fashion, and can not step out or switch to another detail. In spite of this we do not have the feeling as if we were watching a longer documentary. The films give us concise information in relatively short stories. These motion pictures use old recordings in front of a cartoon-like background, or animated cut-outs of old photographs which gives the impression of browsing on an internet site. This approach and these techniques help all age groups to comprehend the exhibition. The curator does not force his own interpretation on the visitors, but allows them to shape their own understanding and opinions.

The exhibition is part of the project “Culture and Nature: The European Heritage of Sheep Farming and Pastoral Life” and is open again from 1 April 2015 in the Skanzen in Szentendre
